Miss Lancaster

Miss Patricia Lancaster, Headmistress of Wycombe Abbey from 1974 to 1988, died on 27th March after a short illness.
Harpers and Queens Magazine, during Miss Lancasterīs time as headmistress, described her as "one of the most respected and loved figures in women's education today". The Chairman of Council at her retirement described her as "the finest headmistress in the land".
Among Pat Lancaster's measurable achievements as Headmistress were the building of the lakeside arts centre, named after her, the establishment of the new Clarence buildings, the introduction of personal tutors for sixth form girls, the provision of study bedrooms for all the lower sixth and better accommodation for House Mistresses.
It was not only these but her personal qualities that made her an outstanding Headmistress. She possessed energy, stamina, vision, charm and a well-developed sense of humour. She was accessible to all, a great listener and a tremendous influence by example.
At her final Speech Day the list of the school's successes had never been equalled, but her philosophy saw education not just as academic achievement but involving learning to care for others, organising time, learning how to administer, to lead and to persuade and how to develop confidence and inner resources.
Pat Lancaster had a warm relationship with the Seniors. In her first letter to the Association she wrote, "I should like you to know how much you will be welcomed at the school in my time here. One of the great strengths of a school like this is its deep roots in the past as well as its forward looking vision. We are all part of the community and one endeavour." At her final Seniors AGM all stood and applauded spontaneously.
She will be greatly missed.
